"My work emerges from experiences of foreignness shaped by living in multiple countries. While movement has offered growth and adaptation, it has also created a sense of displacement. Rooted in childhood road trips, car travel became a constant connecting past, present, and future. Seen from behind the steering wheel, the work explores roads and transitional landscapes as metaphors for memory, migration, and emotional transition through atmosphere, light, and weather."
About the Artist
Melina Cossio is a Mexican-born artist , who has lived in Mexico, Chile, Finland, and Canada infuses her oil paintings with a sense of journey, movement, and discovery. Drawn to roads and urban landscapes, her work reflects the passage of time and the shifting emotions of life between cultures. Each brushstroke becomes a search for familiar places, shaped by her experiences as a foreigner seeking belonging.
Movement is central to her paintings. Dynamic strokes capture the rush of speed as well as moments of stillness, inviting viewers to feel the rhythm of travel and the quiet pauses in between. Inspired by her photography, Melina blends layers of luminous glazes to create depth, light, and atmosphere, finishing with brushwork that emphasizes mood and texture.
Her work bridges memory and the intersection between human-made environments and nature, offering more than a visual record, it is an emotional map. Through these paintings, Melina invites viewers to step into her world, connect with its energy and atmosphere, and discover their own reflections within universal themes of time, change, and the search for home.
