"As an artist I have always strived to use my own voice and experience as a reference for my artwork. I grew up in a rural Ontario town. As a child and throughout my adolescence, I often struggled with finding the line between rules, routines, and compulsive behaviours that felt out of control. Often creativity, whether through craft, writing, or art, felt like an outlet, a time where worry was taken from the forefront of my mind.
Throughout the past few years, I have been exploring topics of neurodivergence, ritual, routine, and the impossibility of perfect repetition through the lens of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). I have always used art as a means of healing, but lately I have been using art as a way of finding quiet, finding peace, or finding joy, the same way I used it as a child. In future years I will continue to look at the relationship between art, joy, and how art impacts my perceptions of landscapes, people, and the world around me."
About the Artist: Grace Maier She/her
"I attended Western University for one year as part of their Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program before changing paths and entering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at Conestoga College to become a Registered Nurse (RN). I am concurrently currently completing my degree at the University of Waterloo in Social Development Studies, which emphasizes the study of psychology, sociology, and social work. Allowing myself to make a change that would let me fill a helping role in the lives of others has expanded my knowledge of humanity.
Throughout my artistic journey, I have presented my work at the Cambridge Centre of the Arts 20th Annual Juried Exhibition, the Neilson Park Creative Centre’s 30th Annual Juried Exhibition, and the 2022 Annual Juried Exhibition at Western University.
I am excited to be sharing my art at the Necessary Arts Collective, and I thank them for allowing me to be a part of their gallery."
